Meet Sugar…our Official Mascot!

This is Sugar, Our very special Mascot!

Sugar
Sugar

Sugar was born with a birth defect that causes her front hooves/feet to curl underneath her.  In laymens terms, the tendons in the back of her lower legs are too tight and therefore draw her hooves underneath.  This could have been corrected right after her birth, however it wasn’t.  As she has grown, her hooves flare out at the sides, and the problem has also caused her to have arthritis in her “knees”. Sugar is about 3 years old now, and has been a permanent resident of Rock~N~Rescue since March 29, 2007.
She has blossomed into such a character and has come a long way since she first arrived here.

We will be taking Sugar in to the Large animal clinic at Shands UF in Gainesville Fl on August 4th for her corrective surgery.  She will be prepped and evaluated that day, and have the surgery on August 5th.  Providing there are no complications, she will be able to come home on the 6th. We are confident that she will heal just fine and that her life will be much better once she has fully recovered.
We will update her progress as much as possible on here and Myspace.

UPDATE 08/31/08

After being examined by the wonderful vets at the U of F Shands Vet Clinic in Gainseville Fl, it was decided that Sugar would not benefit enough from the procedure to put her thru it.  There was also the chance of making it worse then it already is along with infection or even death.  They assured us that in every other way, she is JUST fine and there is no reason to have her put down.  They feel she is being cared for in the correct manner meaning not allowing her alot of area to run and hurt herself.

We will be closing on the lot immediately next to us in a few days which gives us one half acre of land towards the amount required by code enforcement of one acre.  And we are hopeful our proposal for the othe lots next to this one to lease will be accepted bringing us to one and one quarter acre; more then the code requirement.   However we will still be filing for a variance as now this horse is a part of this family until she dies from natural causes.  This will hopefully prevent any further problems with this county as we definately want to abide by the rules as set forth.
